Welcome to Project S.A.F.E.
Project S.A.F.E. is a pilot project supported by funds provided by Wheaton Franciscan-St. Joseph and being administered by the Burleigh Street Community Development Corporation (BSCDC) with the Auer Community as one of our partners. The project will promote safety awareness and implement several crime prevention initiatives. The initial target area is bounded by 43rd Street (east), Burleigh Street (south), 60th Street (west) and Roosevelt Ave (north connecting). If the pilot project is successful, funds will be sought to broaden the target area to include a larger part of Sherman Park. Project S.A.F.E. is a pre-cursor to a larger, year-long campaign designed to increase the quality of life for residents in our neighborhood, improve security and enhance street/neighborhood life, while at the same time empowering residents.
Safety Training and Education
Classes on safety awareness provided for women within the target area by the Director of Security at Wheaton Franciscan - St. Joseph.

Lights On For Safety!
A campaign to have residents turn on their front porch lights when it gets dark outside, purchase and install garage lights, and work with city departments to improve sidewalk/street lighting.
Safety Patrol
The initiation of a private security driving patrol within the initial target area. We have secured the services of a former law enforcement officer with extensive background, training and experience who will drive a marked vehicle throughout the target area. This will occur 3 nights a week, from 8pm-2am, passing by each home and through each alley 2-3 times, during the pilot time period. We may vary the days of the week and/or the time of day of the patrol during the pilot period. The driver will be unarmed, but will have a dedicated cell phone to call the police with any suspicious activities. He will not leave the vehicle but will have eyes on the neighborhood at all times during his patrol.
